Design your soft play area
Creating a soft play area can provide hours of exercise, enjoyment and memories for your children. Designing and building your own playground equipment can keep your costs reasonable and allow you to customize your play area for your children's needs and interests. Many do it yourself soft play area plans are available, incorporating swings, slides, forts and even rock climbing walls. You may want to combine elements from different plans to create the backyard playground of your dreams.
Designing Your soft play area
-
Before you start looking for soft play area plans, you need to decide what you want your backyard play area to include. Swings, slides and sandboxes are backyard classics; however, a play house, tree house, fort or rock climbing wall can all be nice additions to your play area. These can even be integrated into a larger play structure if desired. Watch your children play at the park and notice what they prefer. You will also need to consider the amount of space available, note any required surface preparation and plan for a suitable cushioned ground cover.

Free Playground Plans
-
There are a number of free playground plans available at no cost. You can find plans for simple projects for your playground, like a teeter-totter or free plans for full activity centers with slides, fort areas and shaded sandboxes. Keep safety in mind, particularly if you are considering vintage woodworking plans. Modern safety standards can be much higher than those 20 or more years ago. Look for playground plans that rely on naturally weather resistant timbers or pressure treated lumber and galvanized hardware so your backyard play area will stand up to the elements.
Purchase a soft play area Plan
-
Many people opt to purchase do it yourself playground plans along with all the kit hardware. This is an affordable option, as you only have to purchase the lumber to go with your playground kit and plan. A variety of do it yourself playground plans are available as hardware kits, including forts with sandboxes and multiple slides. These plans may be more detailed and thorough than free plans. Some playground kit manufacturers also offer plans without hardware. You may even be able to purchase a kit plan immediately, via online download.
